During the “In the Tree” scene, the types of camera shots were able to convey the frantic mood of the two-character chase. As Bella catches sight of the “dog” in the distance, the camera imitates the slight delay of human vision, showing a blurry image that clears as she realizes the imminent danger. Then, as she races into the woods, there are quick pans around the forest and up the tree, allowing the audience to view her perspective. Next, as she climbs, there are multiple different angles cut at odd times, giving a disturbing and anxious feel to the scene. Soon, the “dog” appears; the camera cuts from a close-up on Bella to a close-up of the “dog”. The audience sees both characters at an equal position, allowing them to see just how diametrically opposed they are; a wide shot follows, showing a staredown between the two. Bella, the human, is literally held in a vaulted position to the “dog”, showing humanity’s brief superiority over the AI. There is a skill (in this case the ability to climb) that the robot “dog” is unable to recreate. Though it tries, it cannot literally catch up to the position of the human. As the story progresses, it becomes obvious that there can only be one victor: the “dog” or the humans. This specific scene offers a ray of hope, allowing the audience the comfortable position of seeing themselves as the winners.
